This book is a collection of afrofuturistic short stories that explore themes of queerness, Black resistance, and technological surveillance. With all the stories occurring under the “New Dawn” regime, the tone is cautionary and deeply emotional. The characters are queer and marginalized protagonists surviving a dystopian cityscape under a lot of tech. The focus is primarily on their survival in the oppressive world. The frame is heavily detailed, so while there is world building the reader will quickly be able to picture it.
The book is based on Monáe’s 2018 album Dirty Computer.
