This books has been referred to as prophetic for many reasons, most recently due to the devastating January 2025 Los Angeles fires.
The frame of this dystopian novel set in a not-so-distant future California that has been ravaged by fires and social disorder. Told through the journal entries of a fifteen year old, there is unique perspective of a young, hyper-empathic girl named Lauren who is coming of age while the world literally burns around her. She begins to develop her own belief system, focusing on resilience and community.
It is realistic and dark. While mostly bleak there is a touch of hope.
It is medium paced with an even mix of external and internal action. The reader will care about Lauren’s journey as she navigates cannibals and pyromaniacs. There are characters Lauren meets along the way that are also interesting.
